I am exploring alternative surface materials and what the relationship of that material has to my photography. I took a series of images of disused fishing nets in the Gaza Strip during a previous trip while the country was under an economic embargo, enforced by Israel and Egypt. The embargo is still in force today and is an official ban on trade. It wasn’t always the case, silk was transported thousands of miles from China to Europe through the many ports in the Middle east including Palestine, Lebanon and Syria, these countries were once key transport hubs on the Silk Road.

To me, the unused fishing nets on the Mediterranean coast in Gaza are a symbolic representation of the effects that this ongoing blockade has had on the fishermen. I will donate a percentage of the sales to CARITAS who work in the region helping those denied the basic human right of the Freedom of Movement.
